What is a "click", "hit", "impression" and "conversion"?

CLICK is the action of the search engine user actually clicking their mouse on your ad, sponsored link, or in the results page of a search engine where they are brought to your site, services and/or products.   This is also known as a CLICK-THRU.   All pay-per-CLICKS cost a specific amount of money that is unique to all terms and rankings therein provided by the search engines. A CLICK is considered a lead directed to your website.

HIT is the action of a user visiting your site.   HITS can come from an ad, typing in your URL directly into the address bar or any other means of delivery that you are offering for a user to get to your website.

An IMPRESSION is the action of your ad, or sponsored link, being visible in the results page of a search engine, article, or wherever your advertising is placed. If your ad appears somewhere, that counts as an impression.   It does not become a click until the user actually clicks on it.

CONVERSION is the act of a visitor completing an action that you desire from your website.   It could simply mean visiting a products or services page, filling out a sign up form, buying a product or picking up the phone and calling you.   In most cases your conversions can be tracked right on Google, Yahoo!, and MSN to help determine the return on your investment (ROI).
