What is a META tag?
A META tag is an html tag in the header section of a web page, intended to offer content to search engines. These tags are hidden from the common view of internet users browsing your website. Among them are the keyword and description tags, specifications on when a search engine should re-visit a page, site category and accessibility. Contrary to popular belief there are still search engines using this information to deliver results.
